The Occultist

Alchemists

Changelings

The Occultist is a worker of magic, a once mortal capable of transcending the boundaries of humanity.

Humanity that may be lost forever.

The Alchemist is…

A studious researcher who unravels the potential of this realm via science and experimentation— pushing the boundaries of what mortals were meant to do. Alchemists favor the library, the school, the laboratory– they are beings of method and study. Through study they believe any problem, man-made or divine, can be solved.

While changelings revel in the wild magic of the outdoors, to alchemists, nature is to be studied as a tool. It is to be compounded into potions that bolster their physical prowess and allow them to wield the power of the elements.

“Hubble bubble, toil and trouble. Academics burn and meddlers mumble.”

What an Alchemist can do:

Alchemists are beings that shine in strategy and planning. Their potion experimentation and discovery has allowed them to rearrange their humors to allow them to perform feats of strength. Through this they ignite objects around them by a whisper, ascend into the air to leap over a wagon, or steel their flesh and become immune to the extremes of nature.

They are also gifted in the ways of elements, and can change materials from one substance to another. But beware, surfaces that look like gold may also carry leaded poison— mercury is to an Alchemist as blood is to you.

How to make an Alchemist:

All Alchemists are born by a moment of “eureka”— a great discovery that changes their very blood and bones into something beyond human.

For some Alchemists, they are forever altered after a night in the lab mixing unknown ichors. Others open a sealed grimoire and have their very being rearranged by eldritch runes. Some are taught in institutions, hidden away behind secret doors within closed fraternities and sororities.

When creating an Alchemist you must have your eureka moment be clearly defined, even if your character does not fully understand it.

Once created, an Alchemist is long lived. But, more often than not they are not immortal. All Alchemist in Loom County must be under 250 years old.

The Changeling is…

A conduit that possesses the innate– or acquired ability to draw from extraplanar realms and forces, gaining power by pulling the energy of the otherrealms into this plane. Changelings were born from many things, by a fae switching out a mortal infant for a homunculus, an infernal being striking a contract with a human, or something from the great beyond corrupting the mind of the unsuspecting.

Where alchemists favor libraries and schools and dark academia– Changelings run wild in nature with their covens, wielding the powers of the mind and soul. Humanity is a tool, and gifts from a changeling always come at a cost.

“The clock strikes the witching hour, all veils align. The weird are owed this dance.”

What a Changeling can do:

A Changeling is a being that thrives in mystery. They can assume the faces of those around them, conjure poison out of morning dew, and twist the minds of those around them and send them into deep slumber.

They are also gifted in the ways of life and nature, and can conjure plant life into their hands by their force of will. But beware, a flower in a Changeling’s hand always has thorns— even if they cannot be seen.

How to make a Changeling:

Changelings are always created via a contract (whether unknowingly or not) with an extraplanar entity. This could be via a generational pact that their ancestors entered with a spirit, or are switched at birth by an trickster entity. Perhaps they enter into a contract with an being composed of pure shadow and starlight, or are corrupted by an infernal figure cloaked in fire.

When creating your changeling you should have a definition of this being, and the terms of the contract defined— even if your character does not fully understand it IC.

Once created, a Changeling is long lived. But, more often than not they are not immortal. All Changelings in Loom County must be under 250 years old.
